Kirkonkylä School in Hämeenkyrö is one of the forerunners in protecting teachers, pupils and staff by securing healthy indoor air

Kirkonkylä School in Hämeenkyrö, Western Finland

Elementary school for 1–6 grades, and a pre-school.

310 pupils and 19 teachers.

Challenge

The school was built in the end of the 60s and it represents the architectural style of that time. The building has a flat roof, low plinth and no eaves to guide rainwater. An indoor air quality problem was found in the building. The problems are due to inadequate central ventilation, and the old building material.

In recent years, renovations have been made and parts of the school was sealed. However, the enhanced ventilation led to fine particles being released from the structures. This weakened the quality of indoor air and caused skin and eye symptoms to many of the people in the school.

Solution

A data about amount and quality of symptoms was collected and studied by symptom surveys, which were conducted yearly. Genano’s expert made an initial analysis of the situation, checking the school premises and probable cause of the problem. The next steps were to estimate the required amount of air purifiers, according to the amount of rooms, and other areas in the premises. Every classroom and teacher’s rooms were equipped with Genano nanoscale air purifiers, in order to protect the people. All together 30 air purifiers were placed in school premises.

"I believe, and from experience now know, that Genano air purifiers can be used to improve indoor air quality in sick buildings.” Principal Timo Mäkelä Hämeenkyrö municipality, Kirkonkylä School

Result

The air purifiers have now been in use for 2–3 years and they have proven to be a functioning and effective system, which improves the indoor air quality significantly. This observation is also supported by the yearly symptom surveys to the students and the staff, which shows a significant decrease in the symptoms, that were a problem earlier. An important notification is, that Genano’s experts proper placement plan of the air purifiers eliminated the possible noise discomfort, that was a concern of a client.

“Still a large number of Finns are exposed daily to indoor air quality problems in sick buildings, at homes, in schools and at work. If the problems are not addressed early and effectively enough, many people will get sick in vain. From a humane and economical point of view this is a great tragedy. I believe, and from experience now know, that Genano air purifiers can be used to improve indoor air quality in sick buildings.” Principal Timo Mäkelä Hämeenkyrö municipality, Kirkonkylä School
